Decided to throw this together for my own quick reference. It’s based in part by a guide by Amanda Dean (Nalyr). These commands can be entered into the chat window (hitting space in the usual keyboard figuration on PC.) These commands can also be used to design macros for your convenience. Commands are broken into the follow syntax: /command [optional] {required}.
Chat
- /s {Message} – Say something to those nearby you.
- /sh {Message} – Shout something to everybody in your current area.
- /t {Player Name} {Message} – Tell another player something in private; your message will not be visible to anyone else.
- /p {Message} – Say something to your fellow party members, even if they are in different zones.
- /l {Message} – Say something to your linkshell mates, no matter where in Vana’diel they are.
- /em {Emoted Text} – Have your character “emote” something. The /em command allows you to emote any message you like, but unlike the predefined versions there is no animation associated with it. Your emoted text will be prefixed with your character’s name. For example, using the message “sneezes” will output: “Character sneezes.”
- /cm {messaging mode} – Sets your default chat mode to anything you like (except shout). This decides what mode of chat you’ll be using when you press spacebar (on PC), type a message and hit enter. This usually defaults to say if left unchanged.
Emotes
Each of these emote commands have a character animation and text output associated with them, and work as you might expect from other games. Append “motion” to any of these commands to perform the animation without the text. For example, /point motion will cause you to point, but wont output any text.
- /sit – Not to be confused with /heal; /sit does not cause you to regain HP or MP. You can perform a limited number of emotes while sitting; they are indicated below with a *.
- /point
- /bow
- /salute
- /kneel
- /laugh *
- /cry *
- /no *
- /nod *
- /wave *
- /goodbye *
- /welcome
- /joy
- /cheer

- /praise
- /smile
- /poke
- /slap
- /stagger
- /sigh
- /comfort
- /surprised
- /amazed
- /stare
- /blush
- /angry
- /disgusted
- /muted
- /doze
- /panic
- /grin
- /dance
- /think
- /fume
- /doubt
- /sulk
- /psych
- /huh *

Items and Equipment
- /equip {slot} “{equipment name}” – Equips {item name} (should be in quotes) from your inventory onto your character in equipment slot {slot}, where slot can be: main, sub, range, ammo, head, kneck, l.ear, r.ear, body, hands, l.ring, r.ring, back, waist, legs or feet.
- /item “{item name}” {target} – Uses {item name} (should be in quotes) from your inventory on {target} To use an item on yourself, use /item “item name” <self>.
Targeting and Chat Variables
Many of FFXI’s commands either require or optionally accept a target. Most of the time you won’t want to specify the precise name of the target you want to use. Variables allow you to create reusable macros that you can use from day one till seventy five. Here’s the breakdown:
- <job> – Insert your current job combination and levels into chat.
- <mjob> – Insert your current main job and level into chat.
- <sjob> – Insert your current sub job and level into chat.
- <hp> – Insert your current HP in ratio form; i.e. 256/512.
- <mp> – Same as above, for MP.
- <tp> – Inserts your TP buildup as a percentage into chat.
- <hpp> – Inserts your HP as a percentage into chat.
- <mpp> – Inserts your MP as a percentage into chat.
- <pethpp> – Inserts your pet’s HP as a percentage into chat. Pet must be in targeting range.
- <me> – Target yourself.
- <t> – Apply the command to whatever you’re currently targeting.
- <s> – Applies the command to your sub target. Useful when you’re locked on to an enemy and need to cast a spell on a party memeber.
- <lasts> – See above. Targets the previous sub target.
- <stpc> – Sub targets strictly PCs.
- <stnpc> – Sub targets strictly NPCs.
- <b> – Target party’s current enemy. If you are fighting multiple enemies, it will target in order of oldest fight to newest.
- <h> – Targets nearest NPC that a player has called for help with.
- <p0> / <p5> – Target player #, with 0 being yourself.
- <a1?> / <a3?> – Target player ? (0-5) in alliance 1 through 3.
- <r> – Target last person you sent a /tell to.
- <pet> – Target your current pet (summon, dragon, puppet, etc.)
- <scan> – Target monster most recently tracked using Wide Scan.
- <pos> – Inserts your current position in the zone into chat.
- <mpos> – Inserts your current position while in a boat.
- <call0> / <call21> – Plays an audible effect and (if applicable) vibrates a player’s controller when a chat message is received. Don’t overdue it.
- <scall0> / <scall21> – Same as above but without activating a player’s controller vibration.
- <ncall0> / <ncall21> – Only vibrates a player’s controller. If a player doesn’t have a controller they will hear the audible sound instead.
Offensive and Targeting
- /attack [on/off] {target} – Enables auto-attacking on specified target. If you want to attack your active target, use /attack <t>.
- /range {target} – Uses ranged attack on specified target. Again, you can use <t> to use your active target.
- /shoot {target} – If you have a ranged weapon that uses ammo, you can use this command to shoot at your specified target – guns, bows, etc.
- /throw {target} – Attacks your target with any equipped, throwable ranged weapon – boomerangs, darts, etc.
- /attackoff – The same as using /attack off; disables auto attack.
- /autotarget {on/off} – Toggles auto-targeting during combat. Auto-targeting does what you might expects: it auto targets enemies who are attacking you or your party members. When you drop an enemy, auto-targeting will switch to the next aggressive target. Useful when you’re fighting multiple enemies.
- /target – Targets the nearest targetable thing to you; i.e. the closest object, NPC or PC to you.
- /targetpc – Targets nearest player.
- /targetnpc – Targets nearest NPC, friendly or otherwise.
- /help – Careful here, this one can earn you some enemies if you accidentally use it in a party. /help “untaps” an enemy you are fighting so other’s can help you out. This is useful when you’re being chased or accidentally get a link and need someone outside of your party to provoke it off of you to survive. The enemy will no longer be worth any experience points to you or anyone who helps you fight it.
- /assist {target} – Using this command while having someone who is in combat targeted will switch your target to their enemy and enable auto-attack on your character. Useful for secondary tanks or anyone else who depends on assisting a main tank in damage.
Abilities and Spells
- /magic “{spell name}” {target} – Casts {spell name} (should be in quotes) on {target} To cast a spell on yourself, use something like: /magic “Cure” <self>.
- /weaponskill “{skill name}” {target} – See /magic for usage description.
- /ninjitsu “{spell name}” {target} – For Ninjas. See /magic for usage description.
- /song “{song name}” {target} – For Bards. See /magic for usage description.
- /jobability “{ability name}” {target} – See /magic for usage description.
- /pet “{pet command}” {target} – see /item for usage description.
Miscellaneous Player Options
- /heal [on/off] – Equivalent of pressing CTRL+H on your PC keyboard. Causes your character to kneel to the ground and rest, recovering HP and MP.
- /check {target} – Equivalent of pressing CTRL+C on your PC keyboard. Considers NPC targets and outputs your impression of it’s difficulty to your chat log; for players, this will open their paperdoll.
- /fish – Begin fishing with an equipped rod and bait.
- /dig – Use while riding a chocobo to have it scavenge the ground in front of you for items. Using this command will consume one Gyshal Green from your character’s inventory. The command will fail if you don’t have any Gyshal Greens with you.
- /dismount – Dismount from your chocobo.
Player Grouping
- /invite [on/off] – Toggles your “Looking for Party” flag, allowing party leaders to search for and invite you to join their group.
- /autogroup [on/off] – Puts you into Autogroup mode. You will be automatically grouped with other players in the zone with a compatible level range to yourself.
- /join – Accept a party invite you’ve received.
- /decline – Reject a party invite you’ve received.
Party
/pcmd {command} – Replace {command} with one of the following:
- leave – Leave your current party.
- add {Player’s Name} – Leader only. Invite specified player to join your party.
- kick {Player’s Name} – Leader only. Kick specified player from your party.
- breakup – Leader only. Disband party completely.
Alliance
Alliance commands are very similar to party commands, with the respective leaders of those parties representing that group as a whole. /acmd {command} – Replace {command} with one of the following:
- leave – Party leader only. Remove your party from the alliance. Your party stays intact, with you as it’s leader.
- add {Party Leader’s Name} – Party or Alliance leader only. Invite a party to join yours to form an alliance, or expand your existing alliance.
- kick {Player’s Name} – Alliance leader only. Removes a party from your alliance.
- breakup – Alliance leader only. Disbands alliance; each party returns to their individual party status.
Linkshell
- /makelinkshell – Allows you to create a linkshell after you have purchased one from an NPC. Equivalent to going into your inventory and “using” it.
- /breaklinkshell – Breaks the linkpearl you currently have equipped. If you are the leader of that linkshell, each of the member’s linkpearls will also be destroyed.
- /linkshellmes {command} – Allows you to control the linkshell message system. {command} can be either: level {All/LS/PS} (determines at what level a member can change the LS message; defaults to PS, or “pearlsack” holders.), set “{Message}” or clear. The last two options should be fairly self explanatory.
Voting
You can create polls for members of your parties, alliances or linkshells to vote on. The syntax is: /nominate {party/alliance/linkshell} “{Question}” “{Option 1}” “[Option 2]” – “[Option 8]“. Your question and options should be individually surrounded in quotes. You may have up to 8 options, and a minimum of 1.
To vote in a poll, use /vote {option number}. Votes are anonymous.
Moghouse
- /bank – Open your bank.
- /storage – Open your storage.
- /mailbox – Open your mailbox.
- /layout – Activates layout mode, allowing you to place and move furniture. Doesn’t work in rentals.
- /garden – Activates gardening mode, which allows you to use various options to care for your plants. Doesn’t work in rentals.
- /tribune – Temporarily logs you out of FFXI and into PlayOnline to the “Vana’diel Tribune” page. Essentially a shortcut; it functions much like /pol.
Miscellaneous
- /servmes – Display the server’s message of the day.
- /ver – Output the current FFXI build and version info to the chat log.
- /echo {Message} – Output a message to your chat log. Not visible to any other players.
- /random – Roll a dice and share the results with those nearby.
- /automove – Toggles your character’s auto-run.
- /follow {Target} – Toggle auto-follow on the specified target. You’ll follow them until you reach a zone line, or more frequently, until you get stuck on a tree somewhere.
- /names – Toggle the rendering of item, NPC and PC names on your screen. Great to use before taking screenshots. You might notice a small FPS boost when names are off.
- /wait {Delay in Seconds} – Used for macros. Pauses macro execution for {Delay} amount of seconds.
- /volunteer – Usable on FFXI accounts flagged as Volunteers. It’s use is unknown.

Trevor: I’ve never tried to do it myself, but a Google search returned a thread on the subject that might be useful.

Thanks, Evan, for your well presented compilation of text commands. Strangely (and almost unforgivably) enough there wasn’t one as comprehensive and clear before. One command I didn’t find among yours is /lockon, which toggles the combat target lock on and off. I use it in my pulling macros, when I want to be on attack mode, but also able to run back freely to camp.Again, thanks a lot!C
